What Shiva Panchakshara Stotram means
"Namah Shivaya" is the panchakshara, the five-syllable mantra of Shiva from the Yajurveda's Shri Rudram. This hymn takes the five syllables in order — na, ma, shi, va, ya — and builds one verse on each, describing Shiva's form and deeds: the serpent garland, the ash, the Ganga, Nandi, the blue throat, the three eyes of sun, moon and fire.
Reciting it is like a slow, meditative japa of the mantra itself.
