About Shiva
He is worshipped above all as the linga, the formless sign of the infinite, and the twelve Jyotirlingas are among the holiest places in India. His forms include Nataraja, the cosmic dancer; Neelkantha, who held the poison from the churning of the ocean in his throat; and Mahamrityunjaya, the conqueror of death.
The crescent moon, the Ganga flowing from his matted hair, the third eye, the trident, the damaru and the serpent around his neck each carry meaning in Shaiva tradition. Mondays, the month of Shravan and Maha Shivratri are his special times.
