How to do Ramayan path
- Sankalp. On the first day, bathe, sit before an image of Shri Rama with Sita, Lakshmana and Hanuman, and state your intention: the plan (nine days, a month or akhand), and your prayer.
- Invocation. Worship Ganesha first, then Hanuman — the Manas tradition says he is present wherever Rama's story is told; many keep an empty seat for him. Light a ghee lamp and offer flowers and tulsi.
- Read with attention. Read aloud or softly, at a steady pace, without breaking off in the middle of a doha. Families often take turns. Stop at the day's vishram.
- Close each day. Offer a short prayer, the aarti if you wish, and prasad. Mark the day done on this page so you know where to begin tomorrow.
- Complete the path. On the last day, after the final doha and the closing shlokas of Uttar Kand, sing Shri Ramayan Ji ki Aarti, offer prasad, and if you can, feed or help someone in need. Many end with Hanuman Chalisa.
Customs differ between families and regions; follow your own tradition. If a day is missed, simply continue from where you stopped.
Frequently asked questions
What is Ramayan path?
Ramayan path is the devotional reading of Goswami Tulsidas's Shri Ramcharitmanas from beginning to end — at home, in a temple or with family and friends. It is done for blessings, for peace in the home, at festivals such as Ram Navami and Navratri, and on family occasions.
What is Navahna Parayan?
Reading the whole Ramcharitmanas in nine days. The text marks nine resting points (vishram); you read from one to the next each day. It is often done during Chaitra or Sharad Navratri, finishing on Ram Navami or Dussehra.
What is Masparayan?
Reading the Ramcharitmanas over thirty days, a month, with thirty marked resting points. Each day takes roughly 45 minutes to an hour. On this site each day is one page.
What is Akhand Ramayan path?
An unbroken recitation of the whole Ramcharitmanas in about 24 hours, usually by a group taking turns so that the reading never stops. It begins with sankalp and Ganesh and Hanuman puja and ends with the aarti and prasad.
How many dohas and chaupais are in the Ramcharitmanas?
About 1,074 numbered dohas and sorathas across the seven kands, with roughly 9,000 lines of chaupai, plus Sanskrit shlokas at the start of each kand and chhands in between.
Which edition is this text from?
The text follows the Gita Press, Gorakhpur edition of Shri Ramcharitmanas, which is the standard for recitation, with its Navahna and Masparayan markers. Tulsidas's text is in the public domain; meanings on this site are written by us.
