sañjaya uvāca |
taṃ tathā kṛpayāviṣṭamaśrupūrṇākulekṣaṇam |
Sanjaya said: To Arjuna, overcome with pity, his eyes troubled and full of tears, and sunk in despair, Madhusudana (Krishna) spoke these words.

śrībhagavānuvāca |
kutastvā kaśmalamidaṃ viṣame samupasthitam |
The Blessed Lord said: Arjuna, where has this weakness come from at such a critical moment? It does not suit a noble person, it does not lead to heaven, and it brings disgrace.
-
Verse 2.3 · Sri KrishnaOpen →
klaibyaṃ mā sma gamaḥ pārtha naitattvayyupapadyate |
Do not give in to unmanliness, Partha (Arjuna); it does not become you. Cast off this petty weakness of heart and rise up, O Parantapa (scorcher of foes).
-
Verse 2.4 · ArjunaOpen →
arjuna uvāca |
kathaṃ bhīṣmamahaṃ saṅkhye droṇaṃ ca madhusūdana |
Arjuna said: O Madhusudana, how can I fight Bhishma and Drona in battle with arrows? They are worthy of my worship, O destroyer of enemies.
-
Verse 2.5 · ArjunaOpen →
gurūnahatvā hi mahānubhāvān
śreyo bhoktuṃ bhaikṣyamapīha loke |
hatvārthakāmāṃstu gurūnihaiva
It would be better to live in this world even by begging than to kill these noble elders. By killing my teachers, even if they seek wealth, I would only enjoy pleasures stained with blood.
-
Verse 2.6 · ArjunaOpen →
na caitadvidmaḥ kataranno garīyo
yadvā jayema yadi vā no jayeyuḥ |
yāneva hatvā na jijīviṣāmas-
We do not know which is better for us, that we should conquer them or that they should conquer us. The sons of Dhritarashtra, after killing whom we would not even wish to live, stand before us.
-
Verse 2.7 · ArjunaOpen →
kārpaṇyadoṣopahatasvabhāvaḥ
pṛcchāmi tvāṃ dharmasammūḍhacetāḥ |
yacchreyaḥ syānniścitaṃ brūhi tanme
My nature is overpowered by weakness and pity, and my mind is confused about what is right. I ask you: tell me for certain what is best for me. I am your disciple; I have taken refuge in you. Guide me.
-
Verse 2.8 · ArjunaOpen →
na hi prapaśyāmi mamāpanudyād
yacchokamucchoṣaṇamindriyāṇām |
avāpya bhūmāvasapatnamṛddhaṃ
I see nothing that could remove this grief which is drying up my senses, even if I were to gain an unrivalled, prosperous kingdom on earth or even lordship over the gods.
-
Verse 2.9 · SanjayaOpen →
sañjaya uvāca |
evamuktvā hṛṣīkeśaṃ guḍākeśaḥ parantapa |
Sanjaya said: O scorcher of foes (Dhritarashtra), having spoken thus to Hrishikesha (Krishna), Gudakesha (Arjuna) said to Govinda, 'I will not fight,' and fell silent.
-
Verse 2.10 · SanjayaOpen →
tamuvāca hṛṣīkeśaḥ prahasanniva bhārata |
Then, O Bharata (Dhritarashtra), Hrishikesha, as if smiling, spoke these words to the grieving Arjuna in the middle of the two armies.
-
Verse 2.11 · Sri KrishnaOpen →
śrībhagavānuvāca |
aśocyānanvaśocastvaṃ prajñāvādāṃśca bhāṣase |
The Blessed Lord said: You grieve for those who should not be grieved for, and yet you speak words that sound wise. The truly wise grieve neither for the dead nor for the living.
-
Verse 2.12 · Sri KrishnaOpen →
na tvevāhaṃ jātu nāsaṃ na tvaṃ neme janādhipāḥ |
There was never a time when I did not exist, nor you, nor these kings; nor will any of us ever cease to exist in the future.
-
Verse 2.13 · Sri KrishnaOpen →
dehino'sminyathā dehe kaumāraṃ yauvanaṃ jarā |
Just as the embodied soul passes through childhood, youth and old age in this body, so too it passes into another body. The steady-minded are not confused by this.
-
Verse 2.14 · Sri KrishnaOpen →
mātrāsparśāstu kaunteya śītoṣṇasukhaduḥkhadāḥ |
O son of Kunti, contacts of the senses with their objects bring cold and heat, pleasure and pain. They come and go and are not lasting. Bear them patiently, O Bharata (Arjuna).
-
Verse 2.15 · Sri KrishnaOpen →
yaṃ hi na vyathayantyete puruṣaṃ puruṣarṣabha |
O best among men, the steady person whom these do not disturb, who remains the same in pain and pleasure, becomes fit for immortality.
-
Verse 2.16 · Sri KrishnaOpen →
nāsato vidyate bhāvo nābhāvo vidyate sataḥ |
The unreal never comes into being, and the real never ceases to be. Those who see the truth have understood the final nature of both.
-
Verse 2.17 · Sri KrishnaOpen →
avināśi tu tadviddhi yena sarvamidaṃ tatam |
Know that to be indestructible by which all this world is pervaded. No one can bring about the destruction of that imperishable reality.
-
Verse 2.18 · Sri KrishnaOpen →
antavanta ime dehā nityasyoktāḥ śarīriṇaḥ |
These bodies of the eternal, indestructible and immeasurable embodied soul are said to have an end. Therefore, fight, O Bharata.
-
Verse 2.19 · Sri KrishnaOpen →
ya enaṃ vetti hantāraṃ yaścainaṃ manyate hatam |
One who thinks the Self is a killer, and one who thinks it is killed, both fail to understand. The Self neither kills nor is killed.
-
Verse 2.20 · Sri KrishnaOpen →
na jāyate mriyate vā kadācin
nāyaṃ bhūtvā bhavitā vā na bhūyaḥ |
ajo nityaḥ śāśvato'yaṃ purāṇo
The Self is never born, nor does it ever die. It did not come into being and will not cease to be. Unborn, eternal, everlasting and ancient, it is not killed when the body is killed.
-
Verse 2.21 · Sri KrishnaOpen →
vedāvināśinaṃ nityaṃ ya enamajamavyayam |
Partha, how can a person who knows the Self to be indestructible, eternal, unborn and unchanging kill anyone, or cause anyone to be killed?
-
Verse 2.22 · Sri KrishnaOpen →
vāsāṃsi jīrṇāni yathā vihāya
navāni gṛhṇāti naro'parāṇi |
tathā śarīrāṇi vihāya jīrṇā-
Just as a person discards worn-out clothes and puts on new ones, so the embodied soul discards worn-out bodies and enters new ones.
-
Verse 2.23 · Sri KrishnaOpen →
nainaṃ chindanti śastrāṇi nainaṃ dahati pāvakaḥ |
Weapons cannot cut the Self, fire cannot burn it, water cannot make it wet, and the wind cannot dry it up.
-
Verse 2.24 · Sri KrishnaOpen →
acchedyo'yamadāhyo'yamakledyo'śoṣya eva ca |
The Self cannot be cut, burned, wetted or dried. It is eternal, present everywhere, stable, unmoving and has existed for all time.
-
Verse 2.25 · Sri KrishnaOpen →
avyakto'yamacintyo'yamavikāryo'yamucyate |
It is said to be unmanifest, beyond thought and beyond change. So, knowing it to be such, you should not grieve.
-
Verse 2.26 · Sri KrishnaOpen →
atha cainaṃ nityajātaṃ nityaṃ vā manyase mṛtam |
And even if you think the Self is constantly born and constantly dies, even then, O mighty-armed one, you should not grieve like this.
-
Verse 2.27 · Sri KrishnaOpen →
jātasya hi dhruvo mṛtyurdhruvaṃ janma mṛtasya ca |
For death is certain for whatever is born, and birth is certain for whatever dies. So you should not grieve over what cannot be avoided.
-
Verse 2.28 · Sri KrishnaOpen →
avyaktādīni bhūtāni vyaktamadhyāni bhārata |
O Bharata, beings are unmanifest in their beginning, manifest in their middle state, and unmanifest again at their end. What is there to lament?
-
Verse 2.29 · Sri KrishnaOpen →
āścaryavatpaśyati kaścidena-
māścaryavadvadati tathaiva cānyaḥ |
āścaryavaccainamanyaḥ śṛṇoti
Some look upon the Self as a wonder, some speak of it as a wonder, and others hear of it as a wonder; yet even after hearing, no one truly knows it.
-
Verse 2.30 · Sri KrishnaOpen →
dehī nityamavadhyo'yaṃ dehe sarvasya bhārata |
O Bharata, the Self dwelling in the body of every being is eternal and can never be slain. Therefore you should not grieve for any creature.
-
Verse 2.31 · Sri KrishnaOpen →
svadharmamapi cāvekṣya na vikampitumarhasi |
Considering also your own duty, you should not waver. For a kshatriya (warrior), there is nothing better than a righteous war.
-
Verse 2.32 · Sri KrishnaOpen →
yadṛcchayā copapannaṃ svargadvāramapāvṛtam |
Partha, fortunate are the warriors who get such a war, which has come on its own like an open gateway to heaven.
-
Verse 2.33 · Sri KrishnaOpen →
atha cettvamimaṃ dharmyaṃ saṃgrāmaṃ na kariṣyasi |
But if you will not fight this righteous war, then, abandoning your duty and your honour, you will incur sin.
-
Verse 2.34 · Sri KrishnaOpen →
akīrtiṃ cāpi bhūtāni kathayiṣyanti te'vyayām |
People will speak of your dishonour for all time. And for one who has been respected, disgrace is worse than death.
-
Verse 2.35 · Sri KrishnaOpen →
bhayādraṇāduparataṃ maṃsyante tvāṃ mahārathāḥ |
The great chariot-warriors will think you withdrew from battle out of fear, and those who held you in high esteem will think little of you.
-
Verse 2.36 · Sri KrishnaOpen →
avācyavādāṃśca bahūnvadiṣyanti tavāhitāḥ |
Your enemies will say many unspeakable things about you, mocking your ability. What could be more painful than that?
-
Verse 2.37 · Sri KrishnaOpen →
hato vā prāpsyasi svargaṃ jitvā vā bhokṣyase mahīm |
If you are killed, you will reach heaven; if you win, you will enjoy the earth. So rise up, son of Kunti, resolved to fight.
-
Verse 2.38 · Sri KrishnaOpen →
sukhaduḥkhe same kṛtvā lābhālābhau jayājayau |
Treating pleasure and pain, gain and loss, victory and defeat as the same, get ready for battle. In this way you will not incur sin.
-
Verse 2.39 · Sri KrishnaOpen →
eṣā te'bhihitā sāṅkhye buddhiryoge tvimāṃ śṛṇu |
This understanding has been explained to you according to Sankhya (knowledge). Now hear it according to Yoga (the discipline of action). Endowed with this understanding, Partha, you will break free from the bondage of action.
-
Verse 2.40 · Sri KrishnaOpen →
nehābhikramanāśo'sti pratyavāyo na vidyate |
On this path no effort is ever lost, and no harm results from it. Even a little practice of this dharma protects one from great fear.
-
Verse 2.41 · Sri KrishnaOpen →
vyavasāyātmikā buddhirekeha kurunandana |
O joy of the Kurus (Arjuna), on this path the resolute mind is single and focused. But the thoughts of the irresolute are many-branched and endless.

Partha, the unwise speak flowery words, delighting in the letter of the Vedas and claiming that there is nothing beyond them.

kāmātmānaḥ svargaparā janmakarmaphalapradām |
Full of desires and intent on heaven, they praise many elaborate rites that promise rebirth as the fruit of action and aim at pleasure and power.

Those attached to pleasure and power, whose minds are carried away by such words, do not develop the resolute understanding that settles in deep concentration (samadhi).

The Vedas deal with the three gunas (qualities of nature). Arjuna, rise above the three gunas: be free of the pairs of opposites, ever established in purity, unconcerned with gaining and keeping, and centred in the Self.

Whatever use a small well has when there is water flooding everywhere, that much use do all the Vedas have for a Brahmin who knows the truth.

Your right is to action alone, never to its fruits. Do not let the fruits of action be your motive, and do not be attached to inaction either.

Established in yoga, perform your actions, Dhananjaya (Arjuna), giving up attachment and staying even-minded in success and failure. This evenness of mind is called yoga.

Action done for its results is far inferior to action guided by the yoga of understanding, Dhananjaya. Take refuge in this understanding; those who work only for results are pitiable.

One who is endowed with this understanding leaves behind both good and bad deeds even in this life. So devote yourself to yoga; yoga is skill in action.
-

The wise, endowed with this understanding, give up the fruits born of action. Freed from the bondage of birth, they reach the state beyond all suffering.

When your understanding crosses beyond the thicket of delusion, you will become indifferent to all that you have heard and all that is yet to be heard.

The Blessed Lord said: Partha, when a person gives up all the desires that arise in the mind and is content in the Self, by the Self alone, he is said to be of steady wisdom.

One whose mind is not shaken by sorrow, who does not crave pleasures, and who is free from attachment, fear and anger, is called a sage of steady mind.

One who is without attachment anywhere, who neither rejoices on meeting what is pleasant nor resents what is unpleasant, has wisdom that is firmly established.

When such a person fully draws back the senses from their objects, as a tortoise draws in its limbs, his wisdom is firmly established.

Sense objects fall away from one who abstains from them, but the taste for them remains. Even that taste fades away once the Supreme is seen.

O son of Kunti, the turbulent senses forcibly carry away the mind even of a wise person who is striving for control.

Restraining all the senses, one should sit disciplined, devoted to Me. One whose senses are under control has wisdom that is firmly established.

When a person dwells on sense objects, attachment to them arises. From attachment comes desire, and from desire comes anger.

From anger comes delusion, from delusion confusion of memory, from loss of memory the ruin of understanding, and with the ruin of understanding one is lost.

But a self-disciplined person, moving among sense objects with senses under control and free from attraction and aversion, attains inner calm.

In that calm all sorrows come to an end, for the understanding of one whose mind is serene soon becomes firmly settled.

One who is undisciplined has no steady understanding and no meditation. Without meditation there is no peace, and without peace, how can there be happiness?

When the mind follows the wandering senses, it carries away one's understanding, just as the wind carries away a boat on the water.
-
Verse 2.68 · Sri KrishnaOpen →
tasmādyasya mahābāho nigṛhītāni sarvaśaḥ |
Therefore, O mighty-armed one, the person whose senses are fully withdrawn from their objects has wisdom that is firmly established.

What is night for all beings is the time of waking for the self-controlled. And what is waking for all beings is night for the sage who sees.

As waters flow into the ocean, which is ever being filled yet stays unmoved within its bounds, so the one into whom all desires enter in this way attains peace, not the one who chases desires.

The person who gives up all desires and moves about free from longing, without any sense of 'mine' and without ego, attains peace.

Partha, this is the state of Brahman. Having reached it, one is never deluded again. Abiding in it even at the hour of death, one attains liberation in Brahman (brahma-nirvana).

About Chapter 2 — Sankhya Yoga
Seeing Arjuna weeping and confused, Krishna rebukes his weakness and urges him to stand up. Arjuna admits he cannot decide what is right and asks Krishna to teach him as a disciple. Krishna begins his teaching with the nature of the Self: it is eternal, unborn and indestructible, while bodies alone perish, so the wise do not grieve. He then reminds Arjuna of his duty as a warrior. Next he explains the yoga of action: to work with a steady mind, without attachment to results, treating success and failure alike. Answering Arjuna's question, Krishna describes the person of steady wisdom, who has mastered the senses, is free from desire, fear and anger, and attains lasting peace in Brahman.
