Temple visit FAQs

Quick answers before you plan your darshan.

Which are the 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva?

Somnath (Gujarat), Mallikarjuna (Andhra Pradesh), Mahakaleshwar and Omkareshwar (Madhya Pradesh), Kedarnath (Uttarakhand), Bhimashankar, Trimbakeshwar and Grishneshwar (Maharashtra), Kashi Vishwanath (Uttar Pradesh), Baidyanath (Jharkhand), Nageshwar (Gujarat) and Ramanathaswamy (Tamil Nadu).

What is the Char Dham yatra?

The Char Dham are four sacred abodes at the four corners of India established by Adi Shankaracharya: Badrinath (north), Dwarka (west), Jagannath Puri (east) and Rameswaram (south). The Himalayan Chota Char Dham circuit covers Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath.

What should I wear when visiting a Hindu temple?

Modest, traditional clothing that covers the shoulders and knees is appropriate everywhere. Some temples, such as Guruvayur and Padmanabhaswamy in Kerala, have a strict dress code (dhoti for men, saree or long skirt for women). Footwear is removed before entering.

Are temple timings the same every day?

No. Most temples follow a regular daily schedule, but timings change on festivals, eclipses and special days, and Himalayan temples such as Kedarnath and Badrinath close for winter. Always confirm locally before you travel.

How can I add my local temple to The Hindu Book?

Join the Sevak programme and submit your temple's details. Sevaks verify listings so that every temple guide stays accurate for devotees.

Is your local mandir missing?

Help devotees find it. Add its timings, aarti and photos as a Sevak — every listing is reviewed before it goes live.
